ARCES-palazzinaThe Advanced Research Center on Electronic Systems for Information and Communication Technologies E. De Castro(ARCES) was established at the University of Bologna on May 23, 2001, after the approval by the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) of a project to set up an excellence center (EC) in the area of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). ARCES has indeed achieved a number of important results consolidating its structure, strengthening its research organization, and gaining a wider recognition within the local environment and the scientific community at large. ARCES has also proved its ability to devise new projects at the forefront of advanced research in ICT, and to collect the financial resources which are needed to ensure its growth and success within the research arena.

This, however, is a necessary but not sufficient condition: a continuous action must additionally be pursued with the governing bodies of the University in order to become more visible within the local environment. Gaining credibility and support is necessary to overcome the psychological barriers which oppose the acceptance of new entities within the traditional bodies of the University. In the last couple of years, ARCES has indeed achieved a few important results consolidating its structure, strengthening its research organization, and gaining a wider recognition both within the University environment and the scientific community at large.

ARCES aims at the following research, educational and societal objectives:

  • To promote, coordinate and manage research activities in the area of electronic systems for Information and Communication Technologies (ICT);
  • To enhance collaboration and exploit the synergy among researchers from different areas of ICT, i.e. Electronics, Computer Science, Telecommunications, Control and Automation, and from other related disciplines, such as Mathematics and Geomatics, in order to set up the required critical mass to devise, design and develop innovative electronic systems advancing the state of the art in the field;
  • To strengthen collaboration with European, national and local Industry and carry out the technology transfer of the more relevant research results;
  • To strengthen collaboration with highly-qualified European Research Institutions by participating in European projects and international research initiatives;
  • To establish a European Doctorate program and to promote extended visits of our PhD students in highly-qualified Universities and Research Institutes abroad;
  • To recruit young graduates and post-docs by offering them research grants and scholarships funded by ARCES;
  • To establish Master programs addressing new and emerging technologies to help young graduates to enhance their professional skills;
  • To pursue the generation of spin-off and support a protection policy of the IP rights generated with the ongoing research work;
