European PhD Program PDF Print E-mail
A European doctorate program in Information Technology was started by ARCES at the beginning of year 2004. The participating Institutions are a number of highly-qualified European Universities and Research Centers, which signed an agreement protocol to define terms and conditions of the program. By separate agreements, a discipline ruling the conferral of double doctorate degrees has been established by the University of Bologna with K.U. Leuven and INPG Grenoble, as well as with the Research Institutes IMEC and CEA-LETI.

ARCES future strategy PDF Print E-mail
ARCES-sala_riunioniIn view of the economic problems of the Country, it is reasonable to expect that national funding of research programs will severely decline in the coming years. This process has already started in the last few years, and is likely to continue in the next five-year period. Nearly all Universities in this Country are facing challenging budget problems due to severe funding cuts, and the University budget structure, which typically allocates over 90% of the available resources to the payment of salaries, is forced to narrow down its support to research, at least in the short term.

Spin-offs PDF Print E-mail
A fairly large number of spin-offs has been originated by the ARCES activity over the years. Two of them, namely Yacme S.r.l. and ImaVis S.r.l. were established before the Center foundation. Likewise, Silicon Biosystems S.r.l. was established in year 2000 in connection with the research activities on biosensors, and is currently involved in joint research work with ARCES.

Funding PDF Print E-mail
The ministerial contribution to set up the Research Center amounted to K€ 2.538 and was released over three years (2002-2004). Three European IST projects (DEMAND, MEDICS and HIGH-TREE) pertaining to the 5th Framework Program, with a total budget of K€ 1.217, are completed or near to completion. Within the 6th Framework Program, ARCES is involved in three Integrated Projects (MAESTRO on wireless communications, MORPHEUS on multiprocessor system design, and PULLNANO on advanced ULSI technology), two STREP projects on bio-nanoelectronics (RECEPTRONICS, COCHISE) both coordinated by ARCES, two Galileo projects (GAMMA and MAGIC); two Networks of excellence on silicon-based nanometer devices (SINANO) and open cultural-heritage processing (EPOCH); a Marie Curie Action (EDITH) to support a European PhD Program in Information Technology. All together ARCES has been involved in 13 European projects in the 5-year period, which are listed in Table I at the top of next page. The aggregated budget of the above European projects exceeds 4 M€.
